This initiative forms part of the Eco-Schools methodology, where children play an active leadership role through their Eco-School committee. Although we often hear broad terms like “sustainable mobility” and “sustainable travel,” this project focuses on helping students translate those ideas into practical actions that fit their daily reality as children, as well as the routines of their families.
Over the years, the programme has already created opportunities where students’ ideas were not only discussed, but implemented, leaving a real impact on how people move from one place to another within their community.
What the initiative encourages
Schools are supported to develop a School Active Mobility Plan where children are at the centre of the process. Working together with educators and parents/guardians, students are guided to create a plan that is:
- Green and innovative
- Child-led, with adult support
- Focused on everyday short trips (how we move small distances today)
- Designed to influence habits within the school community and beyond
The initiative follows the Eco-Schools structure and encourages schools to use the 7-step methodology to integrate active mobility into school life. The Eco-School committee leads the process and helps ensure the plan becomes part of the school’s culture, not a one-off activity.
